Well-being Support Groups

Voluntary Action Charnwood’s Well-being Service runs three Well-being Support Groups which meet monthly in Charnwood. Anyone with a concern for their personal well-being is welcome to attend, for example carers and former carers, people with disabilities and people living alone.

The groups are informal and friendly and enjoy a range of speakers on a variety of health, information and rights, personal safety and other more light-hearted topics of interest. There are occasional trips, a Christmas Lunch and most importantly, plenty of time to talk and share experiences.

Meeting times and dates are as follows with each member attending makes a £1 donation towards room hire and refreshments:

Loughborough Group – meets on the 1st Thursday of each month from 1.30pm – 3.30pm at John Storer House.

Shepshed Group – meets on the 3rd Thursday of each month from 2pm – 4pm at the Charnwood Road Community Centre.

Sileby and District Group – meets on the last Thursday of each month from 12.30pm at the Boat House, Barrow On Soar. The group have lunch first.

For further information or if you’d like to attend any of the groups, please contact Joanne Clarke tel: 01509 631782 or e-mail joanne.clarke@voluntaryactioncharnwood.org.uk

We have a Well-being Service based at John Storer House and which offers a variety of services throughout Charnwood. Karen Frostick is the Activities Service Manager and she can be contacted on 01509 631772.

With access to all the services available at John Storer House, the Well-being Service includes Activity Planning, Gardening Project, Activities at Volunteer Centre Shepshed and the Sexual Health Project whilst also working closely with Community Transport including a person-centred Support Planning Service.

Health and Well-being is something that most services are now recognising and planning for in their delivery, especially Healthcare providers. However what makes the Voluntary Sector stand out is the fact that we have been providing a Well-being approach to our services for a considerable length of time.

One of the key benefits of the Voluntary and Community Sector is the diversity it can offer. It tends to work in a more holistic way than statutory services, however still manages to provide quality and dependability above all else.

The role of our service is to ensure that the Voluntary Sector is represented when key partners are planning new initiatives, to ensure we are involved and consulted with, and where possible VCS services are used in parallel with more traditional health and social care solutions.

Key outcomes we hope to see as a result of our work are:

  • improved relationships between the VCS and statutory providers
  • increased awareness of the diverse range of VCS services on offer
  • new working initiatives (perhaps commissioning from GPs of VCS services)
  • individuals receiving treatments that impact positively on their Well-being
  • raising awareness of the value of self help, and offering easily identifiable pathways to self help support
  • reduction in repeat visits of patients to GP’s for non-medical treatment and an increased uptake instead to VCS services.
  • Carers'

Following a re-organisation of Carers’ Support and Information services by Leicestershire County Council, Voluntary Action South Leicestershire (VASL) ‘Support for Carers’ Leicestershire’ has taken over from the Charnwood Carers’ Service.

Carers registered with Charnwood Carers' Service can opt for their personal data to be transferred to the new service in order to continue to receive support. This includes any future Carer’s Support Grant applications, carers’ newsletters, quarterly forums on carers’ issues, training and information events and Carers’ Week celebrations. Registering with the new service will also give carers access to a new Telephone Befriending Service and one-to-one help and support. Carers can also choose to remain a member of the Voluntary Action Charnwood Well-being Service.

In order to comply with the Data Protection Act, if you would like your data to be transferred, registered carers should contact Joanne Clarke, Well-being Service Development Officer at Voluntary Action Charnwood tel: 01509 631782 or e-mail joanne.clarke@avoluntaryactioncharnwood.org.uk. New carers can contact Support for Carers' Leicestershire direct at Voluntary Action South Leicestershire tel: 0845 689 9510 or follow the link below.
