Staff and Trustees donned aprons and party hats to wait on almost 100 volunteers who week after week help with catering, transport, admin, activities and fundraising – providing another year of monumental effort, creativity and sheer goodwill to our members, friends, colleagues and visitors.
Volunteer Don Croll welcomed guests as they arrived with carols and Christmas songs at the piano. The Catering Team produced a delicious 2 course Christmas dinner with all the trimmings and glasses of punch and a Christmas quiz helped the festivities along. At the end of the evening, staff gave a rendition of 'Do They Know It's Christmas'.
The purpose of the evening was to say a big thank you to all of our volunteers; for volunteers to meet, talk and marvel - as we all do - at the sheer number of people, hours and giving that happens at John Storer House. Thank you again. » Less

The Well-being support groups hosted a trip to Trentham Gardens to celebrate Carers Week 2014.
The sun shone and the gardens were magnificent and well worth a visit as was the Italian Terrace Café where we could have happily whiled away the entire afternoon sipping coffee and looking out over the lake and gardens.
As the day of the judging approached David Beaumont and his team spent many hours preparing and watering our garden and it looked sensational. The judges, John Simpson and Chris Beal, from East Midlands in Bloom arrived at JSH just before 1pm on 9 July having travelled all over Loughborough looking at a variety of gardens including our allotments at Mountfields. David was able to show the judges his portfolio, tell them about the development of the garden and confirm that we now have over 100 varieties of plants. This year the RHS theme was the Centenary of World War I hence the touching display of poppies, painting and poem and the memorial garden.
This is the third year that the Loughborough in Bloom lunch has been held at JSH to which all participants in the competition are invited. Group photographs were taken in Queens Park after which everyone came to JSH to enjoy a mouth-watering lunch prepared by our Catering Team.
As a judge Mr Simpson obviously had to be non-committal about the overall result, but he did say that he was impressed with Loughborough. He felt sure that the people of Loughborough would be looking towards gold again and commented that, 'unfortunately, if you don't it's going to be my fault, but I'm sure you're going to do really well.'
Everyone's thoughts are now about the Britain in Bloom competition on 5 August when both the judging and buffet celebration will be repeated.
Our thanks also go to Andrew Hull for cleaning the rear patio area which now makes an ideal outdoor eating area for the Café. » Less
